You can only delete characters that have paid their debt to the King. 
Basically he's not letting your freeloading tail-end leave the island after he went to the trouble of setting you up in a free beginner house and furnished you with a operationally challanged magic chair, a weapon (the royally commissioned axe or spear), and a few siulver pieces so the city guards don't have to waste their time arresting you for vagrancy, until you've repayed your debt to society, or more specifically to his royal coffers.
Yes his interest rates are a tad on the extortionist side, and most of us moved out of beginner houses so fast we didn't even notice we were living in a hovel worth close to a million silvers but on the plus side.......erm, ok there must be a plus side...

Ok maybe not. All characters have to pay 1 million plus interests to leave..oh well sorry. :p

Well that stinks :( I don't wanna have to pay the 2 mill i have to a few of my characters just to delete them :( im saving up for a boat :( they should let you delete wich character you want, all well....

they do let you delete whichever characters you want... after those characters have paid the king :p

as for saving for a boat... yes, save that 2 million, and when you get to 5, go get your digger a boat.  once your digger gets to TA (the other island), he will be making way more cash than he currently is doing, much quicker.  at that point, you will probably bring in a mil in 3-4 days (just an estimate, i haven't calculated it).  and then in a matter of days, you can get enough money to transfer from your diggers over to the other char's, if you really want to delete them that bad.
