Hello leveran.
Unfortunatly yes cheating does happen and though i am new to the site, i am not new to the agme. Back in teh day when i was playing at msn Zone. there was a constant battle to work out who was cheating.
In answer to Goddessbibble's querey, yes cheating is more than possible. There has for a long time been a number of programmes designed as aids for the Othello (reversi) community to use as practise aids. The most common programme looks up to 24 moves ahead. It is quite simple for someone to plug the moves of his/her opponent into the programme and copy the replys generated. I cought someone at it in this site yesterday.
As for why they would want to do it, ratings. Some people are so sad that they think having a high (and undeserved) rating gives them some kind of social status or bragging rights.
On Zone in the rated room, ud often find people leaching points of other people and then playing theselves ... constantly clicking the resign button. to boost their rating. Unfortunatly Zone is now gone... so that was a waste of their time =)
Going back to Leveran's question. Other sites, Such as kurnik.org and Vog have used a very simple method of routing out cheaters. by having some kind of indication everytime someone leaves the game window. This means that each time someone switches to their programme the indicator appears and your opponent is aware.
Unfortunatly this cant completly rule out cheating, just give some indication as to who to avoid playing.
If you expect someone is chating, you are best simply to not play any further games with them.
If you are looking for a site with no cheaters ... then its impossible someone will always try. but the best site to try would be Kurnik.org.... as the players there are so experienced that cheaters dont usually get away with it for long. It is also the best place to improve your game. not as pretty as this site. but if you ever want to play in a World Othello championship =) then its a very good place to start.
Please visit www.othello.dk/book. It is probably the best source of othello knowledge on the internet. I am an editor - David Beck.
Thanks.
