game slows down alot
I have a problem with 8-ball and snooker. I'm running an AMD duron 1.6 Ghz, 256 DDR ram, with a GeForce 5200 FX video card. I can only play the game for 30 minutes or so, until game slows way down. It starts making that clicking noise but the balls aren't moving. I know to turn off the Windows firewall, because this has happened before. That fixed the problem initially, but now it still happens, it just doesn't happen as soon. Could it be Windows SP 2? I have that installed. I really enjoy this game, 30 minutes at a time isn't enough. Please help.
You should really consider installing SP2. From a professional perspective, install the OS service pack before any applications, then update any security issues using Windows Update. Get the game working next, then install other applications testing each and the game after every installation. If one application is causing a problem, you will know which one. It is also wise to install the anti-virus straight after the OS BEFORE you connect to the net, and your first connection should be to update the definition files. If you leave security holes someone WILL find them eventually, and it's possibly why you had a problem in the first place.
Well, its formatted now. I haven't installed SP 2 yet. So far the problem is fixed though. SP 2 is kind of annoying, I 'm thinking of not installing it ever. Thanks for the help though.
SP2 will not cause that problem - you're more likely to have security related issues if you don't install it. What version of XP do you have? I used to have problems with the very first issue (I think it was a pre-release), but any installation with SP1 or above pre-installed is good. I don't suggest upgrades from earlier Windows versions, as they can cause suprises.

Search this forum for advice on checking things on your PC. Have you checked your PC for viruses using the latest product definitions? Have you tried clearing your temporary internet files and cookies? Have you used spyware detection program to remove "pests"? Is your pagefile size appropriate (not too small or large)? Do you have enough space free on your HD?

I'd suggest starting by downloading ad-aware from download.com, update the def files and then clean your entire PC. Also check your anti virus defs are up to date, and scan your PC with that.
Well, i have broadband cable connection, so that can't be it. I'm using the web version, I'm not subscribed. But I'm going to back up my hardrive and format it. Then I won't have SP 2 from Windows. I do that once in a while to prolong the life of my harddrive. Any software or regristy problems can't cripple the harddrive that way. Maybe it will run better without SP 2. I'll probably subscribe though, its not that expensive and it would probably fix the problem easily.
Are you playing the PC game or web version? Subbed or not?
Get a faster connection :D dial up crap and so last century :D
