just wondering what size of computer you tankers are using and if it makes any difference along with the internet connection.

I'm using a 533 meg htz with a 28k dial up
It does and im useing a p3 600 mhz and 128 mb ram my connection is 56k.
A lot of the situation also comes from location. Some of the jumpers/ie bankers/junkies lol are located in the same state the game server is in... ie giving them better response times.
Response time is not influenced by location. Assuming nobody is further than 300ms ping time it's the same for all players regardless how far they actually are from the server. Normal ping values to the server are around 200ms from Europe, and around 100ms in the US. However, if you are far from the server (measured in hops), then it's more likely the game will occasionally hang, as the communication between your computer and the server goes through more nodes in the internet.
I guess your not always correct mister know it all thorn you. LMAO
Maxi....weren't u leaving the game? :)

jus kiddin..

a Celeron with broadband connection here

GHOST
We bought a V2 Premier from Shop NBC Pentium 4 1.7ghz. I just upgraded the video card to a nVidia gforce4 Ti 4200 with 64MB DDR RAM, switched memory card from 256 to 512. I am using a dial up internet connection with which I get a connection of 28.8kbps at best. We also just picked up a Toshiba laptop P4 2.4ghz and using the same phone line we get a connection of 44kbps so I think it is the modem in the laptop which is better. I think there is something about the new Tanx that is a problem but I'm not sure what it is. When I first started playing about a year ago my average score was 200-300 points all the time. Now I average between 0 and 0. I have played the game on super fast internet connections only to find out that it's me that gets killed so fast, not the computer. So if everyone would please stop shooting at me I might have a chance. But I'm still allowed to shoot at you o.k. Thanx,,,,M.M.
same as Ghost...(celeron, cable) methinks the key to game here is the processor.....the top tanks usually have P4s or equivalent....they can play hi res and still get shots off faster....sometimes 5 shots to 3.....
it's not the processor. I'm starting to think it's WHO you are.
Then wouldn't it be reasonable to think that someone who is located in the same state, say less thean 50 miles from the server, would be more likely to go through less hops to reach the game server?

I'm not sure why you tried to invalidate what I said, and then ended up agreeing with it.
Also, being in the same state, the jumper is less likely to hit a bad exchange that slows response time.

Location does play an important part in this, in terms of what exchanges you must go through to get your connection to the game server.

I'm sure that there aren't many players who would disagree with me that there are disproportional response times between the different players here.

Though the route you take to connect to the game may not be the only factor in determining your response time, it is a factor to this game and all online action games.

Your response time can also be lagged down by the type of computer you are using, or the way your computer is configured.

and yes i am aware that location doesn't necessarily determine how many hops are between you and a server, i'm just stating the likelyhood of less hops per closer connection

another factor in general is the quality of the route between you and server, and some of us are just going to get poorer response

<end>
Response time: the time between you initiate a shot or move and the action actually starts. This is the same for all as long as you are within 300ms ping time (you can measure it by issuing 'ping gs5.flyordie.com' in a command prompt). Normal response time should be 1500ms (one and a half second, you can measure it with a stopwatch). Occasionally, you can measure higher ping values, which result in a 'freeze' in the game. How often that occurs, depends mostly on the number of hops from the server you are and the throughput of the route. For instance, from here (Europe) ping time is 190..210ms and the server is 23 hops away (the longest hop is the undersea cable between UK/US, that alone takes 80..100ms to trip). The game is totally playable from here, even in worst case it doesn't freeze more than once in a minute, which is acceptable and doesn't influence gaming performance.
However, the Java VM can make the game freeze too (e.g. garbage collection cycles). We have seen performance differences between Sun and Microsoft VMs. MS VM is much faster than Sun's, so using MS VM for Tanx is highly recommended.
Number of shots: Noone is allowed to shoot more than once in a second. As shot commands are not 'buffered', it depends highly on your skill, if you manage to shoot every second.
interesting......Ive played @ the local tech school...(very fast processors there) and can play hi res and romp all over the place shootin like mad....guess who I am or where I live make some difference....poor boy livin with a celeron.................still havin fun tho.....thanks FOD for this silly little addicting game and all the egomaniacs it has spawned.....they're loadsa fun to laugh at.........especially now that the pyromaniacs have em riled up.....hehe

I think if you live in the US, the server to ping is:

216.40.243.213

It doesn't resolve to any name that I can find, but it is located in texas.

If you click START - RUN -

then type COMMAND in the box and click okay.

A black box will appear.

In that box type

ping -t 216.40.243.213

while you're in a game and you'll get a running total of your ping times while you're in

Btw, I use the Microsoft Virtual Machine, but I still notice very poor response times to my tank. Not just in firing but in movement, compared to the other players.

For instance, another player can flank me and fire before my tank even responds to my first command

Does anyone else experience this, or should I look into problems on my end of the spectrum?

Thorn, you are using an older version of the Microsoft VM (build 3234). Please try to update it (see instructions at
http://www.flyordie.com/games/default/badVM.html
). Please let us know if that helps. Thanks.
Thanks!

I'll try it out and let you know what happens.

I hope this works.
I'd just like to say thanks to flyordie for the help. I'm not positive, but I believe i am noticing a definite improvement in the response time of my game.

I have no idea why, but the latest service pack was not on my machine.. and i had to install several updates to get to the point where the VM would work.

Thanks again for your help.
Hello,

This is for FOD. Given the link for the Java update, the link to Microsoft says i don't have any updates avaliable for my machine. However, when i click on the FOD link to see if my Java VM is up to date, it says it's out of date.

Can FOD provide an explanation?

Thanks,
fast_yz400 WG
Yeah, I know you didn't want me to respond, but I'm doing it anyway.

I believe the problem is that the link leads to a static web page, not a web page that detects whether your VM is up to date or not.

It's possible that the page on the link only appears after another page has detected your VM.

The way to tell if your VM is up to date is to d/ld the file they have linked and run the executable.

If it doesn't install and gives you an error then you need to upgrade some other windows components, if it installs fine then you're good to go. (in so far as i know on the subject)
well, the lag seemed to leave for a day, but now it has returned

i'm not sure if it was just a quirk

a few others reported that it seemed to be gone yesterday, but returned today

coupdesac and welshman i think were the two
