Server problems
Why does the server seem to crash so regularly? I have a broadband connection and no problems anywhere else online; however, I lose one game in two when the server fails. Some other people have the same problem. It's a bit mindless as you automatically lose and so lose points when the site can't cope, for whatever reason.
Food for thought: If the server crashed, how did it take points from you to give to your opponent?

You have no idea that it's the server crashing. You could have spyware or any other kind of unseen problem on your PC breaking the data stream, whilst your PC might have started another process causing the same effect. Your ISP is capable of anything, you have no idea when there is a glitch in your broadband connection - or in any of the other routing servers on the way to Fly Or Die. It's a fact that data packets can be dropped anywhere, from cables to cpu's, memory leaks to drive write errors etc.

Whilst it's true that FoD will also have some problems of their own from time to time, the frequency of your problem probably suggests that it's local to you. From home and work broadband in Switzerland last year and now Canada most of the very few disconnections I have experienced have been linked to a sudden increase in either my CPU or local network activity. There are only a small number of people complaining about frequent disconnections, so maybe think about that...

Here are some hints for looking after your PC:

1 - Make sure that you have a quality anti-virus system and keep it up to date.

2 - Use anti spyware, either pay for automatic protection or else check definitions and scan regularly, at least once per week. Some products also help immunize against threats. Here are some free products, download.com probably has them:

 AD-Aware (
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/adaware.html)

 Spybot - Search and Destroy
 Spyware Blaster

3 - If you have an internet firewall, make sure that it's not instrusive. Norton for example can be. The XP SP2 built in firewall does not cause me any problems. Note that If you are on a corporate network, expect more problems as you don't have exclusive right to the internet bandwidth.

4 - Defragrament your HD regularly, and make sure it has enough free space to work with.

5 - Don't install Kazaa or any other program which vastly increases your chances of instrusion by opening ports on your computer.

Also, when playing FoD don't do too much in the background. It may be possible that if another process zaps the CPU resourses then the FoD window could drop the stream.
OH PLZ THE SERVERS ALWAYS CRASHIN,THATS WHY PPL DO THESE POSTS
Rubbish, if the server crashes then it's not there to take your points away. Explain how you can be certain that any of the number of routers your data stream passes through are not causing the problems? You can't, and they may be. If the FoD servers crashed all the time then how come others of us don't have the same problems?
when the game kicks you out,it classes as a win to the other person..obviously u havnt been on this game long enough to know that..

plz note it also happens to alot of ppl who give up and dont bother posting..

plz get ALL ur facts rite..

newkie ;)
Exactly my point - if the server crashed then the other person would ALSO get kicked out. They don't though, and they get your points because FoD considers you leaving as a loss (to stop people leaving to avoid losing). The fact that you are losing points suggests that you are the one disconnecting. Although it is possible that FoD are dropping your stream, I would expect a more random spread of victims.

Can anyone reading this who does NOT have any problems please post to say so. It would be interesting to see the other side :)
the other persons game freezes when ur kicked out,as far as they know there waiting for a cue not knowing u have been kicked..

read back in the forum, not under tech and u will see ppl askin op for the same help..and wat about the times wen every1s been kicked off even those in the lobby? wats that a act of god!!

jus stop whingin bout gettin booted man, yes i get booted, but thts bout once evry few months
Beppe knows what he's talking about. All good advice and you would do well to listen to him. I used to have problems with getting booted and found out it was adware and a virus that was the problem. I find that the FOD server only has problems rarely. When it does everyone gets booted and it doesn't effect points.
