black and white
it gets so annoying when black and white are potted together, then you lose...it would be much better if 8 returned to its starting place and the white could then be moved by the other player, that way you wouldnt lose from bad luck.

im sure that the rule was intended to stop people deliberatly fluking the 8 as much, but if you had to name pockets this wouldnt happen
but if u just respot the black and let the other person have white in hand ur still gonna lose, so whats the difference?

wat a terrible thread
not if the other person still had the rest of his balls to clear up, if your 7balling someone then 8 and white go, they would get to move, but they would still have to clear up.

and thanx to flyordie for clearing up all the insults i got for posting this
Yeah, let's completely change the age old rules to suit our preferences. Great idea !
Is moving past the white line in the
old
 rules ? :p
In US 8 ball yes, BIH means the white can be placed anywhere on the table. The line is only used for the break.
yea zeolo! u know what your talking about....why is it always the crap players who make fun
Hmmm, well if the black can be relocated because of a scratch, then why not allow relocation of any other ball as well if there is a scratch. Why should it be just the Black when a scratch happens?

See my point? The point is that if you were to change that aspect of the game, there are a lot of different aspects that have to be changed as well in order to keep things consistently fair. What your asking for is more complicated than it sounds because the dynamics of the game would then be reshaped according to specific players' needs like your's. That's not fair for everyone now is it?

Even if they do change it, you'll still have bad luck on any given day. And when you do, what will you say then? Luck happens, deal with it.
Crap players? Please could we arrange a game to see about that? I'm not sure if you know who I am but I have pretty much the best record this place has ever seen and I'm not even joking about that. So yeah, name a time and a place.
And yes I do know what I'm talking about. ;)

In the most widely recognized official rules of 8 Ball, if you scratch when shooting at the 8 ball it is considered a foul just like any other and the opponent is given ball in hand. If you scratch and make the 8 ball on the same shot THEN you lose the game.

In the FlyOrDie version of the game, as in most bar room pool, you lose if you scratch on the 8.

By the way, another question occasionally brought up here in the forum is what should happen if the 8 is pocketed on the break. According to official rules:

4.8 8-BALL POCKETED ON THE BREAK
If the 8-ball is pocketed on the break, breaker may ask for a re-rack or have the 8-ball spotted and continue shooting. If the breaker scratches while pocketing the 8-ball on the break, the incoming player has the option of a re-rack or having the 8-ball spotted and begin shooting with ball in hand behind the head string.
