If you are talking about FlyOrDie making tournaments like in pool and tanx I dont think it would work that greak in chess seeing as the good players might only play 2 or 3 games in 1 hour. And thats not enough to seprate them  and get a clear cut number 1.

I know it might be quite hard but perhaps we could have a knockout competition? Lots of other chess site do have those sort of tournaments, and would possibly attract more players to play chess.

Well you could always create a myleague league. which will let you host turnies for FOD chess.

fod could make an all day tourney for it and after the 24hours see who has most points
