Hope someone can help here..a friend of mine did a scan with Spybot search & destroy..and it picked up something called "Torpig" which spybot could not remove..they did adaware and avg scans but they did not detect it..they then did another spybot scan and it was still there..does anyone know how they can remove this please?

I don't know much about the topic in general, but I DO know some spyware is actually needed for different tasks on computers.
okay Stream I did a bit of looking around and found this site

http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojtorpiga.html

Click on the recovery tab and it gives instructions to remove torpig manually using the regedit command (Be careful when deleting things from the registry, make a backup).

What was the full name of the "torpig" that was found? because there seems to be a few variations, the info above is for Torpig-A,

This may be of some help stream

torpig is a password stealer type Trojan that obtains passwords and information

Hi...thankyou for your advice on this..she wouldnt try the registry one chris..she was too scared she might do something wrong..but thanks anyway..and the other reply well she did the free scan but before they could delete it she had to buy the software :S

StreamLine
Hmm okay well this may be of use

http://www.scanspyware.net/download.htm

It claims it can remove torpig, and it also says there is a "free trial". Maybe your friend could download it and use the trial to remove it (Again I have not tried this, so exactly what "free trial" means I am not sure :p)
TrendMicro

May take awhile but will pretty much find and destroy anything. All the best to your friend Stream ;)
Thanks guys for your time in helping..we are trying every suggestion that you all have given here..and will let you know the outcome

Spybot is a time-waster. Actually, all free anti spyware software suck.
I agree with Chris, I have had good success with AdAware from lavasoft.
>Spybot is a time-waster. Actually, all free anti spyware software ****.

You are kidding right :|?
Spybot has found spyware on my own computer before and got rid of it. It does what it says it does, so how that's "time-wasting" and rubbish is beyond me.

And no offence to anyone who's bought anti virus/spyware etc software before, but paying for it can be a waste of time with the amount of good free software that's available (Unless of course you are a business needing an extensive package of protection :))
AVAST ANTIVIRUS/SPYWARE IT IS FREE ALSO SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY

(Please turn caps of in forum, thanks Mervin)

StreamLine,

This post is 2 months old so I'm not sure if the problem has been solved or not.

What I would suggest is turn off system restore on the infected computer first. If a file is in one of the computers restore files I don't think you can get rid of it unless you turn off system restore.

after doing that reboot the computer in safe mode and then run all the detection programs again.

If you don't find the problem now you know it was in a restore file and it is now gone.

If you find the problem is still there try to remove it again. You may be able to do it now in safe mode.

If it is still there and you still cant remove it I would suggest trying
"HijackThis"
. Its a free program and it makes a file you copy and past in a tech forum for the free tech teem to look at and walk you through step by step to get rid of your problem.

You can get the program here at
http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/#Top

And then register and get your help from the forum at
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/register.html

Hope this helps you or anyone else out with a persistent problem.

Hit-N-Run

PS: I should have added after you find you have removed the infected file turn the system restore back on, reboot the computer and make a new restore point :)
