Football is back \o/
And aren't Sunderland doing badly :(
3 defeats, dwindling crowds, the optimism of the takeover slipping away. Quinn needs to get some good players in and fast, before we slide even further down the ladder.
On to my first club, Woking. After last season's disappointing league campaign was masked by an FA Trophy final run that got more credit than it deserves, as we only played teams in divisions below us all the way up to the final and then only turned up in the second half, 2-0 down already.
Manager Cockerill took the strange step of basically resigning all of last season's squad bar a few, notably Conference 2nd top scorer Justin Richards who went to Peterborough and hasn't been replaced, which is the main worry. We have two out and out strikers at the club - Craig McAllister, who's a target man but lacks confidence when it comes to finishing and Giuseppe Sole, an 18 year old who went to my school, in my brother's year! Great things are hoped of Sole but it's too soon to throw him in at the deep end, so Steve Ferguson, a striker that has been converted into a winger will have to shake off his inconsistent ways if we are to find the net this season. The midfielders will have to chip in too - attacking midfielder Ollie Berquez signed from arch rivals Stevenage has a big role to play.
The other striking option is Chris Sharpling. Ahh, Chris Sharpling, Woking's longest serving player, signed for 60 grand back when clubs actually had money. Such a talent before 2/3 horrific challenges have ruined his career. If fit very effective, but there lies the problem. Glenn wants to keep him but with such a limited budget at Woking it's very hard - he's on non-contract terms and won't get a contract till he proves his fitness but has picked up a back injury that will rule him out for 2 months. :(
Another injury is to Ian Selley. Undoubtedly our best player when fit, he suffered from a cruel double hernia last season and despite tryingto play on he was nowhere near his best. Then he tore his calf muscle in the FA Trophy Final warm up then in his bid toget fit for this season, snapped his achilles tendon on the exercise bike - not a lucky man. Out till the new year, though who knows when we will see him again. We've signed Shola Oyedele as cover for him, a fantastic player we had on loan last season. Sucha relaxed player, he has incredible vision and a great passer.
Yesterday it was announced we've signed Goma Lambu on non-contract terms. He came to us to get fitness as he knew our right back Simon Jackson - impressive friendly performances have given him a break. Like Shaun Wright Phillips, very small but incredibly fast and an extraordinarily low centre of gravity make him a real handful, as it looks like we'll be playing a 4-5-1 with two attacking wingers in him and Ferguson.
The season started on Saturday up at SOuthport with a 0-0 draw. Quite a negative result some might say but seeing as we've lost every first game for years and always lose in the north west, it's a good result, and the reports back were pleasing as to ourstyle of play this season.
First home game tonight. \o/
Crawley Town, a club in real crisis on -7 points and we're their "rivals" (they're not ours :p) and a chance to get 3 points under our belt.
COME ON YOU CARDS!
My God that was a long post
