Firewall Need Help
Since I loaded Norton Inernet Security Firewall I have had no end of problems? If I try to play Tanx on the Internet it's so slow and that much lag impossible to play. When I play in PC game sometimes when playing it throws me out onto my desktop, also while in PC game if I come out of an op to play another op I get thrown back onto desktop. This happens even if I disable my Firewall. I emailed Tanx support which I must say is a first rate support. They emailed me back telling me to open port 4988/4989 tcp both diections. can anyone tell me in SIMPLE way how to do that and even where I start?
Has anyone else had the same problem
Ok i have listed below the basic steps involved. Please note these steps are a for a specific version of the Norton Firewall. Your own version
may
differ slightly from the information listed below.

Communications: protocols and ports

The Add Rule dialog box for Communications provides two choices, the protocol and the ports

The appropriate protocol to select depends on the rule. The protocol choices are:
•	TCP
•	UDP
•	TCP and UDP

The choices for ports are:
•	"Any type of communication." This option applies the rule to all ports.
•	"Only the types of communication identified below." This option applies the rule only to the ports that you specify.

To apply the rule to all ports
1.	Select the protocol.
2.	Select "Any type of communication."
3.	Click Next.

To apply the rule only to specified ports

1.	Select the protocol.
2.	Select "Only the types of communication identified below."
3.	Click Add. You see the Specify Ports window.
4.	Select the type of Locality:

•
Local
. This option indicates the port number for service or process that is at your computer. For instance, for an incoming communication, the local port is the destination port. For an outgoing communication, the local port is the source port.
•
Remote
. This option indicates the port number for the service or process that is at the other computer. For an incoming communication, the remote port is the source port. For an outgoing communication, the remote port is the destination port.

5.	Select one of the following options under "Filter by":
•	"Known ports from list." NIS and NPF maintain a list of commonly used ports. When you select the "Known ports from list" option, you see a list of individual ports:

a.	Select each port to which you want this rule to apply. Do this for as many ports as you want to include.
b.	Click OK. The selected ports are added to the list of ports that this rule applies to
c.	Click Next.
•	"
Individually specified ports
." When you select the "Individually specified ports" option, you see a box in which you can list the ports that you want the rule to apply to.
a.	Type the port numbers in the box. Separate the ports by a space. The following example uses the ports 22, 5631, 5632, and 65301:

b.	Click OK. The selected ports are added to the list of ports that this rule applies to, as in the following example:

c.	Click Next.

•	"Port range." Use this option to specify a contiguous range of ports. For instance, the range 1417-1420 includes the port number 1417, 1418, 1419, and 1420. When you select the "Port range" option, you see two boxes.
a.	Type the lowest port number in the range in the "Enter the starting port" box.
b.	Type the highest port number in the range in the "Enter the ending port" box. The following example uses the range 1417-1420.

c.	Click OK. The selected ports are added to the list of ports that this rule applies to.

d.	Click Next.

I hope that helps you a little. Sorry if it contains lots of Jargon, but i have tried to keep it as close as possible to what you are likely to actually see on your screen.

To add a new Application rule

Open the list of rules:

Open Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.
Double-click Personal Firewall.
Click the Program Control tab. You see the list of Application rules.

Add the rule:

Click Add. You see the "Select a program" browse window.
Navigate to the executable file for the application that you are adding, and then select that file.
Click Open. You see the NIS or NPF Program Control dialog box.

It has the following choices:

Permit
Block
Manually configure Internet access

Select an option, and then click OK.
You see the Application Category window.
Choose a category, and then click OK.
Your application is added to the list.

Configure the rule:

If you chose Permit or Block, you are through configuring the rule.
If you chose "Manually configure Internet access," you see a series of windows for configuring the rule. Answer the prompts.

Click OK.
Close NIS or NPF.
