I just played two games with a player ranked just a few points above me. I won both games. However, my new rating DROPPED by about 20 points!

I agree. I think the ratings are purchased or manipulated. The rating system makes absolutely no sense, and certainly doesn't fit with any mathematical model.
They probably did one of their cheating procedures on you too...Several times I have won the game and lost points, while the loser gained quite a bit of points...There is a lot of points manipulating going on here...
