I don't know if this is old news or not, but I believe I've found one significant positive difference between the building stones.  The Giant Building stones take fewer mana to make than the equivalent in regular stones.  This makes a difference to my Fighter-type, who can only make 20-some stones between diavovinos, but can make 4 giant building stones at once.
