Monstology Tracking
Hi all,

Is there any interest in adding capability to
http://LarkinorGuide.com
that will help us keep track of which monsters have been repopulated on which squares? I had this in mind when I build the Island Map feature, but I just wanted to check and make sure it was something people would use before I spend the time on it.

When this feature is up and running it will allow us to see a list of all the monsters that have already been fully repopulated on each block. This has some advantages and some disadvantages:

ADVANTAGES:
- if you use the tool, you won't waste clicks capturing and transporting a monster that has no place to go
- the monstology specialists won't have to maintain monster lists for each block (a fairly easy job for one active block, but each additional block makes maintaining the information more and more difficult)

DISADVANTAGES:
- user updates are very much required... if people don't add the info as they learn it, the system doesn't live up to its potential

I can knock together the code in a day or two, but I won't bother unless people will benefit from it. Please let me know by posting here.

i was saying the exact samething today sandy it is areally great idea and saves alot of hassle
i definitely think that an interactive monster tracking system would be a great asset.

Okay, I've got the first half built, and have entered a few monsters from the "established" thread to get us going.

There is an advantage to adding non-established monsters to this list (effectively "reserving" it for yourself). Any suggestions how we can combat this besides making the user accountable by including his/her name as I have done in the list so far?

Sandy
ABSOLUTELY!

I was going to try and track this myself.

Okay, about the only thing I can think of is adding a bunch of "Monstology Moderators" to the site who will have the rights to insert any submitted montology information into the live database. These people should be well known around here and have a good reputation. They must also be willing to take the responsiblity of having their Larkinor account name appear on the LarkinorGuide.com website beside each monstology entry that they submit (whether they were the person who actually did it in the game or not).

If you fit the above description, send me an e-mail via the "Contact Me" link on my site. Please send it from the e-mail address you would like me to set up the account login as (this is also the place where forgotten passwords are sent), include your main Larkinor Quest account name, and choose a NEW password that you would like to use to login to my site (please don't use your LQ password... I don't want to know it).

Perhaps asking for the message that is received when a monster is 'established' on TA? Yes, you would have to confirm the message and it doesn't totally prevent lying, but it is an option. Or ask for the person who reported that the monster is 'established' to associate his/her name with the report.

A suggestion: as more TA squares get cleared, it may make more sense to key the monstology tracker to the monster and not the square.

In other words, on each monster description page on Sandy's site, add a new field highlighting which locations that monster currently inhabits. That way, when a monster is encountered, one need only click a single link to see if it's worth trying to catch the thing or not.
I can tell that that's an excellent idea because I've already had it! Heh!

Seriously though, it's in the works. Give me a few more days. I put it on the back burner since we only have one active monstology block at the moment.

Once it's working it'll show which blocks the monster CAN be populated on, which ones he HAS been populated on, and which ones he HASN’T been populated on. This will become pretty much the only useful way to look up monstology status as soon as there is more than one active monstology block out there.
