The game type icons in Backgammon let you choose which variant to play:

- 2 pieces shown (left icon) → Classic Backgammon – standard rules.
- 3 pieces shown (middle icon) → Hypergammon – each player starts with only 3 checkers.
- 4 pieces shown (right icon) → Nackgammon – a variant created by Nack Ballard with a different starting setup.

You can set this in the game settings under Game Type before starting a match.
