defense against thieves
I don't want to sound like I'm whining, but it seems to me that the thieving system is tremendously unfair to lower level players.

Just walking around trying to play the game I get my pockets picked fairly often. It's never anything too valuable, so I don't care too much, but I'm annoyed because there is NO DEFENSE against it at all.

I get robbed by characters that are 10 or more levels higher than me, so I can't fight them, or try to steal back from them. At those levels stealing my meager possessions can't net them anything valuable, so they must just be doing it to be jerks. I've got my character set on 'shy', which stops them from trying to kill me, but it doesn't stop them from stealing from me.

As to houses, you can buy a trap, but a low level character can't seem to afford something that will effectively keep a thief out. And it's annoying that I have to spend 10,000 on traps to try to stop people from stealing my 3 measly rubies I'm saving to build a shield, and even that much didn't stop my rubies from getting taken.

In most other games like this, there is some administrative control. Either you can't steal from people much lower level than you, or you can only do it in certain places or something. But in Larkinor it seems that the strong prey on the weak and there isn't a damned thing you can do to stop them.

Am I missing something? I wouldn't mind thieves if there was some defense against them, but the way the game seems to be designed, you just have to suck it up and helplessly watch people walk away with your things.

well thats the game, thieves and robbers actually pay to do those things. ps for something that wasnt supposed to be whinning it sure sounded like it
if i remember correctly, levels 12 and under cant be stolen from, and you dont really have to move out of the novice quarter until about level 18. after that, you should be able to have enough to deal with the relatively few and inexpensive items that get stolen from you.

P.S. people are not stealing from low level-ers to be jerks, theyre stealing for experience points towards stealing level.
I'm just saying that there should be some defense against it. As it work right now, there is nothing you can do but stand there and let people take your stuff.

Games are about making choices and dealing with the consequences of those choice. For example, in general Magical weapons do less damage than non magical ones of the same level. But if you are fighting certain monsters without a magical weapons, you are screwed. But you learn from that experience and take steps to protect yourself by carrying a magic weapon or at least learning some spells. If you get poisoned and don't have a prayer wheel, you are in trouble. So you protect yourself by spending the money and getting one.

But there is no defense, there is no equipment, there is nothing you can learn or train, or anything to stop people from stealing from you. I don't mind losing, I just find it frustrating that there is nothing I can do to protect myself.

If, for example, they offered an item in the store that protected against stealing, then if I didn't buy it and got my stuff stolen it would be my own fault. But now, it seems that a player can do everything right, take every precaution possible, play the game to their best ability, and still lose to thieves constantly, and that doesn't seem fair.

My tips:

If you don't want to be stolen from stop hanging around in the CC where all the theives hang around. Alternatively, build up your own stealing skill by stealing from the game using the "Try to Steal" option in the drop down. You can easily get to level 100 with under 10k worth of clicks. Getting to level 200 (the maximum you can get without stealing from players) will take a lot more clicks (probably 18-20k more), but it's a diminishing returns thing anyhow.

Secondly, don't bother storing rubies and other next-to-worthless stuff in your home. Anything that regularly sells on the market for 50% should either be placed on the market for 50% along with the others, or sold at the store for 50% then bought from the market when you actually need the item.

as sandy said... to avoid stealing, avoid city centre. that's the most common place to find thieves. you can do basically everything you need to do, except accept and report for missions, without entering cc.

with respect to robbing, there are some squares that are hit less than others. robbers have their favourites (some rob dd more, because it's closer to casino's to upgrade robbing lvl's. some rob closer to cc to store items in market when they get them. some rob most often on the square of a char they really like to get at least once a day). basically, find the right squares (yes, you may have to buy a new house 5 or 10 times before finding the square that's right for you)... and you won't have as much problem.

Theres no need for you to store anything valuable in your house just yet, so store it at market where you can either save it there until further use or can be bought back easily if already bought. No need for you to get traps at this stage (which im guessing is below lvl 20), since even the highest you can carry will be robbed, simply a waste of money.

As for thieves, its already been pretty much covered, stay away from CC as much as possible if you are carrying valuables on you, and click quickly (either entering building or entering/leaving the cc square). Stealing is a part of the game, if you cant yet defend avenge yourself by killing the thief, set yourself goals in lvling up so you can, or acquiring stealing skills of your own.

Dump all your money into traps first. Then in your travels stay away from other people.
:)

lol theives don't look at who they're stealing from. They just click and hope they get something good. During building, I can honestly say I've had about 100 magic nubs stolen from me while trying to get to the mage tower. I don't complain, just swallow it and buy some more.

I would advise not getting traps until you can afford/carry enough to get 550+. Since I have had three of them, I don't recall ever being robbed. :D
That right. Walk away and stay alert when you see higher level person that rank themselves god. This is usually the suspect thieve. Stay in house when you log out but unsured how efficient it is.
Sometime when you really get on your nerve, drink a wonderflask and get your revenge. But mostly i died but thank to the insurance i din lost anything. There is once i manage to win and get some great reward too. And i learn from them that during PvP no need to use ranged weapon as first strike. Just have fun!!!
